Position summary:
Applies engineering principles and researches, designs and develops new products and systems to meet customer standards and design requirements. Translates broad concepts of customer requirements into reliable, cost-effective, and producible products. Works with CAD system, designing and drafting functional mechanisms, assemblies, tools and components. Including locks, latches, slides, hinges, valves, actuators, springs, cable/tubing harnesses, pumps, etc.
Essential Functions:
- Makes high quality engineering models, sales models, assemblies, and detailed drawings from ideas, sketches, marked-up drawings or layouts.
- Makes tolerance analyses of complex mechanisms through understanding of true position and conventional tolerancing.
- Makes calculations, as necessary, in completing assignments using trigonometry and algebra.
- Redesigns existing hardware for improved performance, which may involve designing testing tools and fixtures and helping to confirm the re-design.
- Develops BOM’s and Assembly hierarchy. Understands and is familiar with a PDM/PLM drawing release process.
- Creates and modifies design features of existing product. Designs and conceptualizes components and assemblies for new development under the supervision or guidance of a Sr. Mechanical Engineer or Engineering Manager.
- Performs material selection based on product requirements.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements
- Good math aptitude, including courses in basic algebra and trigonometry.
- Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment – practices concurrent engineering.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks required. FEA proficiency a plus.
Education and Experience
- Mechanical Engineering degree – Associate degree acceptable if complemented by Experience.
- Solid understanding of Mechanical requirements, Dimensioning, tolerancing and GD&T.
- Minimum of three years of design experience. Thorough knowledge of mechanical components and mechanisms such as gears, bearings, actuators, controls, springs, etc.
